Assets    Documents    Who is Eligible    Denied Eligibility    Penalty Period

Medicaid is a program funded jointly by the Federal government and the State of New York. Not everyone is eligible to participate in the Medicaid program, as applicants and recipients of Medicaid must meet strict income and resource guidelines, among other criteria. For those individuals eligible for Medicaid benefits, Medicaid covers physician's services, hospital care, medications, supplies, and other reasonable and necessary services. Perhaps most importantly, Medicaid covers the costs of long-term care in either your home or a skilled nursing facility.

The costs of long-term care for illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease or paralysis caused by stroke can eventually deplete an individual's or couple's hard-earned assets. If an individual is eligible for Medicaid, Medicaid will pay for physician, hospital and long-term care, among other services, subject to certain deductibles and income contributions from the individual. It is important to consult a qualified Elder Law Attorney early in the Medicaid planning process to ensure that you are made aware of and consider the options available to you to meet the costs of long-term care
